Q: I have a Bermuda close to the house in a small area, the rest of the area is about 39,000 square ft. I would like to use Empire Zoysia instead of Bbermuda. Is that a problem?
A: The Zoysia and the Bermuda will compete. Both grasses utilize the same maintenance materials and mowing heights. It will be hard to keep them seperate unless some type of barrier is utilized. Perhaps pavers or a strip of bedding plants would serve the purpose.

A: The Zoysia and the Bermuda will compete. I'm not sure which one will win. Both utilize the same maintanance materials and mowing heights. It will be hard to keep them seperate unless some type of barrier is utilized. Perhaps pavers or a strip of bedding plants would serve the purpose.
Q: I have an issue with my Empire Zoysia lawn . Several large areas ( 4-6) square feet are browning and dying out. Looks like lack of water but I water on a regular schedule. I have treated for cinch bugs and grubs but the lawn isn't improving. The problem occurred over about a 30 to 60 day time period. Any suggestions?
A: Sounds like Rhizoctania, commonly called Brown Patch. Treat the area with Armada Fungicide as directed on the label. You will probably need to retreat in approximately 7 - 14 days.
Q: I have Flortam in my backyard that is recoving well from the recent freezes. My frontyard also Flortam and was heavily damaged and part is definitely dead. My sideyards get minimum sun and the Flortam had basically died out leaving me with two long weed patches. What would you recommend for my front and side yards? I'm in Orlando.
A: Sapphire would be great for your front yard, and Seville will work good on the side.
Q: I live in Tampa, FL and recently had Empire Zoyisa sod put in. When should I consider cutting the lawn for the first time?
A: You can mow when you can pull up on an individual piece of sod and feel that it has been rooted down. This may take two weeks or two months, depending on how well you maintain the lawn.
Q: What can be used on Zoysia for weeds and can it be cut with a regular lawn mower?
A: Try using 24D as a treatment for weeds on your Empire Zoysia. It can be found at your local lawn care products supplier. Any lawn mower can be used to cut your sod.
Q: I have Empire Zoysia that we planted in November. The grass looks good returning from the cold winter; however there are seeds (purplish red). Are these normal with the Empire grass? Also, how low should the grass be cut?
A: Yes, those seed heads are normal for this time of year. If you mow the grass you won't have them. Best mower height is 1 - 2 ", but no more than 2".
Q: I have a lawn that up until last summer received full sun. As the trees have grown a portion of the yard now gets 1/2 day shade and has killed my Bermuda. Will the Celebration Bermuda work in this area and can I mix it with traditional Bermuda?
A: All grasses need 4 - 6 hours of light a day. Celebration is great for shady areas, as long as it gets the required light during the day.
Q: I live in Northeast Oklahoma and have your Empire Zoysia lawn. Do I need to mow the dormant grass for the new spring growth? What should I set the mower height to? Thank you for your response.
A: Whether it is dormant or not the Empire Zoysia should be mowed. Keep your mower height around 2 inches. Empire performs much better at this height and there will be fewer problems if kept mowed at 2 inches.
Q: Hello. I live in St. Petersburg, Florida and planted 4 trays of Empire Zoysia in what little left I have of Floratam St. Augustine. I planted about 1ft apart and watered in good. How often should I water the plugs. How do I care for these plugs?
A: We generally don't reccomend plugging Empire into an existing St. Augustine yard because they have two "completely" different growth patterns. You can apply MSMA or 24D to stop the St. Augustine runners and watter the plugs to wilt. Meaning when the plant leaves start to shrivel up, water them.
